Elements of Story Review

What makes a good story? Every story, whether truth or fiction contains literary elements. We call these elements of story. How an author uses these, determines whether or not the reader enjoys the story.

Plot Elements Exposition -meet characters -given background Denoument Resolution -conflict is resolved Climax -Moment of highest tenstion Rising Action -the conflict is propelled by drama and suspense Falling Action Inciting Action -Moment that introduces conflict and begins the story

Every story has what? CHARACTERS— – Are our characters endearing? Do we relate to them? Do we want to know what is going to happen to them? – What motivates our characters? Who are they? – Protagonist – Antagonist – Supporting Characters

Every Story has what? CONFLICT -The problem, tension and issue to be resolved throughout the story. What is the problem? – Internal? Does the character have a decision to make or issue to resolve within themselves? – External? Man vs. man Man vs. Society Man vs. Nature

Writer’s Toolbox What tools does the author use to propel his story? FLASHBACK- going back to an event previous to the focused plot line FORESHADOWING- hints or clues to events to come in the plot line

Writer’s Toolbox Description – Imagery – Figurative language Descriptive language used to help the reader visualize and imagine the elements of the story. Setting, Characters and the conflict Ask yourself if the character does a good job of using language to draw the reader in?
