HATCHET By: Nicole Belmonte

PLOT 13 year old Brian Robeson, was going to visit his father while his mother gave him a hatchet. On the plane ride the pilot had a major heart-attack, and they crashed near a lake. Now he must survive using his hatchet and his brain to survive in the Canadian wilderness.

SETTING The setting takes place in New York City Hampton, New York; the Canadian north woods; New York City.

STORY PROBLEM/CONFLICT EXTERNAL CONFLICT: Brian is alone and stuck in the Canadian wilderness. INTERNAL CONFLICT: Brian’s parents had a divorce and his mother is seeing another man(AKA “the blonde-haired man”).

MAIN CHARACTERS Brian robeson : The memories of the divorce, fresh and painful, plague him throughout the book, although less so the more time passes. Brian’s mother: Brian's mother wants to get a divorce from Brian's father, as she is seeing another man, whom Brian does not know, but calls "the man with short blond hair." Jim or Jake: The pilot of the Cessna plane. He is a man in his mid-forties and the only other person on the plane. He dies of a heart attack, forcing Brian to attempt to control the plane's descent.

CLIMAX I think the climax is when Brian becomes the "new Brian" after his suicide attempt when the plane flies overhead without noticing him. Then he starts cutting himself with his hatchet whoa, emo.

RESOLUTION I think the resolution for “Hatchet” is when the man from the plane picks up the signal from the emergency transmitter and takes Brain home(to be specific, the man took Brian to his dad).

THEME I think the theme is man versus nature; the power of the positive thinking; initiation into manhood; the contrasts between urban and wilderness environments. Or something like that.

THE END!!!!!!! =]
