An individually administered reading assessment to determine reading level. It is required by the school district to administer the DRA. Assesses a student’s reading progress over time Scores are given for reading engagement, oral reading fluency and comprehension What is the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA2)?

How is DRA used? Informs parents and teachers of a student’s current reading level. Identifies strengths and weaknesses. Identifies a student’s instructional needs. Helps teachers plan for small group reading instruction and intervention.

When is DRA2 Administered? Administered three times per year: يتم ادارة الامتحان ثلاث مرات في السنة : - in the fall في الخريف -at mid-year نصف السنة -in the spring.

DRA2 Assessment Levels تقييم المستوى العام في القراءة Kindergarten Levels A-3 الروضة First Grade Levels 4-16 صف الاول Second Grade Levels صف الثاني Third Grade Levels صف الثالث Fourth Grade Levels صف الرابع Fifth Grade Levels صف الخامس Any score below 28 for a third grade student at the end of the year is considered below grade level.

How do we use DRA2 with Daily 5 and CAFÉ? Our initial use of the assessments are to find student strengths and greatest areas of need. The results, along with our Literacy CAFE Menu, are used to guide our instruction. We use the assessments throughout the year for progress monitoring and to show growth. For our more at-risk kids, we assess more frequently.

I look at a book. Purpose- Why do I want to read it? Interest- Does it interest me? Comprehend- Do I understand it? Know- I know most of the words.

If the book fits, READ IT!

Would you ever wear a pair of shoes that were too large ? or too small ?

No? Then why read a book that doesn’t fit?

Model the Strategy

Before we read… Look at the cover and talk about what you think will happen in this story. Look at the pictures and tell me what you think is happening in the story. Make a meaningful prediction. Ask- What do you think will happen in the story?

Model the Strategy

While we read…. We use the pictures to figure out unknown words. Then we use beginning letter sounds to figure out unknown words. ثم نستعمل الحرف الاول لقراءة الكلمة /b/ Get your mouth ready to make the sounds!

Model the Strategy

After we read… We retell the story. Start at the beginning of the story and tell me what happened. Use the following question: اسئل ما يلي What happened first? What happened next? What happened last? Your child should: يجب على الولد ان : -use the names of the characters يستعمل اسماء الاشخاص في القصة -tell the story in order سرد الاحداث بالتسلسل -restate the problem اعادة سرد المشكلة في القصة

Model the Strategy

How long should my child practice reading his/her “good fit” books each day?

Teachers + Parents + Child = SUCCESS
