Stereotypes of the 2008 Democratic Election For the first time in the history of presidential elections, an African American and a female candidate have a legitimate chance of winning. The Psychology of General Stereotyping Stereotyping is generally when a certain characteristic is given to a whole group of people. Conclusion Civil rights, suffrage, and the idea of common man vs. elite have all contributed to stereotyping. Through the Civil Rights Movement, the idea of promoting the common man, and granting the right for African Americans and women to vote, the stereotypes may remain, but much of the negative connotation associated with these groups has been dismantled and dissolved.
