Leon County Mental Health & Substance Abuse Reinvestment Advisory Council On September 11, 2008, unanimously voted to establish a separate board to address mental health & substance issues. Crisis Intervention Team Training (CIT) Tallahassee Police Department, Court Administration, & NAMI (Tallahassee) have been conducting CIT classes since December, Tallahassee Police Department, Court Administration, & NAMI (Tallahassee) have been conducting CIT classes since December, Officers from various law enforcement agencies are trained over the course one week (40 hrs.) on how to better handle the mentally ill they encounter. Three classes are held each year with a maximum of 30 participants per class Three classes are held each year with a maximum of 30 participants per class Agencies participating include: TPD, Leon County Sheriff’s Office, FDLE – Capitol Police, FSU Police Dept., FAMU Police Dept., DOC probation & parole, Leon County probation & pretrial, Gadsden County Sheriff’s Office. Mental Health Pretrial Release Grant funding allowed Leon County to implement a specialized pretrial program for mentally ill defendants who would not have previously qualified for pretrial release. Mental Health Probation Leon County probation & Department of Corrections probation and parole have established mental health probation programs for Leon County Leon County probation & Department of Corrections probation and parole have established mental health probation programs for Leon County All defendants placed on mental health probation are assigned to specific probation officers that have graduated from our CIT program. To date County mental health probation has a total of 43 defendants, 12 of which have successfully completed the terms of their probation. MENTAL HEALTH COURT Through grant funding Leon County now has the services of a Mental Health Court Case Manager. Community Competency Restoration Provides case management and competency restoration services to defendants who can be safely maintained in the community Provides case management and competency restoration services to defendants who can be safely maintained in the community This program provides services defendants charged with misdemeanors &/or felonies. EXPANSION OF JIS A mental health database has been established to afford the program with the following capabilities (access is limited): A mental health database has been established to afford the program with the following capabilities (access is limited): 1.Automated assignment of cases to the mental health docket 2.Automated mental health alerts when a mentally ill defendant is booked into the jail 3.Automated assignment of evaluators on a rotational basis 4.Color coding for mentally ill defendants 5.Continuous data entry for each defendant for each booking.
