ISLAMIC EXPANSION

Abu Bakr unified a Muslim state. Muslims set rules for non- Muslims in lands they conquered. – no new places of worship – could not dress like Arabs – could not convert new believers – practiced tolerance ABU BAKR (The first caliph)

Traders took goods and Islamic beliefs to India, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Islam grew in these trading cities along side the traditional faiths of that area. Trade brought new items to Arabia. Arabs learned how to use gunpowder and make paper. Cotton, rice, and oranges were introduced.

Ottoman Empire Turkish Muslims called Ottomans conquered land from eastern Europe to north Africa. Janissaries were key to taking so much land. Mehmed, II took Constantinople in Constantinople was renamed Istanbul. End of Byzantine Empire. Suleyman, I (the magnificent), , expanded the Ottoman Empire into the eastern Mediterranean.

Safavid Empire Persian Muslims called the Safavids took control of Iran. Conflicted with Ottomans. Safavids – Shia Ottomans – Sunni Safavid Empire lasted until mid-1700’s.

Mughal Empire East of Safavid empire in northern India. Mughals were Turkish Muslims from Central Asia. Akbar – emperor in mid 1550’s conquered many lands strengthened government religious tolerance
