Indiana Economic Development From Indiana Economic Development Corporation to Indiana and Purdue Universities Craig A. Stewart Associate Vice President, Research Computing Chief Operating Officer, Pervasive Technology Labs
Components Future Technology Development Center “Even Bigger” Red
Future Technology Development Center Dr. Rob Eades to Direct (remotely from Cincinnatti) 5 FTE professional software development staff, 1 clerical support person To be an IBM Business Unit – developing applications for Cells. NOT a “help IU with local consulting” operation. To the extent that IU faculty have applications that might be of commercial value as commercial products, IBM is interested in pursuing tech transfer agreements Early areas of focus will be imaging and bio applications IBM Labs in Zurich, Haifa, etc. started as Technology Development Centers, so if successful this may develop into a larger facility in the future In parallel, IU (PTL) and IBM (Ram Rajamony’s group) are investigating collaboration opportunities related to bio apps on Cells
Future Technology Development Center To be located on 4 th Floor of ICTC Offices will be physically isolated and secured Cell processors located in machine room will be logically and physically isolated. No, we can’t have accounts on them
Even Bigger Red - Hardware Hardware, 50% owned by IU, 50% owned by Purdue, physically housed at IUB Additional 512 blades; configuration basically same as Big Red It is this expansion that is at the core of the joint IU/Purdue HPCOPS proposal. If the HPCOPS proposal is successful, we will have two partitions: Crossroads (12 TFLOPS) and Big Red (28 TFLOPS)
Even Bigger Red -2 If we don’t get an HPCOPS award, naming is not clear. (One 40 TFLOPS system called really big red not the likely real name) Joint Operations Committee to manage operations (Purdue to provide a sysadmin located at IUB) IEDC-appointed committee to make allocations for use of this hardware in economic development
Economic Development EcDev e1350 BladeCenter Cluster to be accessible to in-state private concerns as well as to university researchers doing tech transfer. No cynicism zone: real commercial impact required IBM to provide 3 warm bodies x 3 years located in state to help private concerns make use of EcDev system Small startup, Lilly Inc, and Rolls Royce have all expressed interest.
