Understanding Culture Chapter 1: Section 2

The Social Sciences Anthropologist: Study people and societies Sociologists: study human behavior as it relates to groups of people. Historian: study how societies came to be what they are today Human Geographers: look at people and their environments.

What is Culture?  It is the way of life of people who share similar beliefs and customs.

What is Culture?  Ethnocentrism: your values are “centered” or based on those of your own particular ethnic group.

What is Culture? Cultural Borrowing: adoption of one group’s culture traits by another group. Cultural Diffusion: a culture spreads its knowledge and skills from one area to another.

Important Lessons in History History is the story of the past. Oral history is history told by the word of mouth. “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”

Government is Necessary Government Limited Government: The people who make the laws must obey them. There are laws that limit what the government can do. Democracy: People govern themselves by voting individually on issues. Unlimited Government: Power belongs to the ruler or rulers. There are NO laws that limit what the government can do. Absolute Monarchy: Kings and Queens are born into ruling families. Their power is inherited and unlimited.

Balancing Our Wants and Needs Traditional Economies Meet the needs based off their customs. Family do the same work for generations to generations Command Economy Government makes all decisions People have NO say on what to do. The government tells them what and how much to produce. Market Economy Individual determine themselves what to produce. Supply and Demand The individuals get to set the price. Mixed Economies They share traits of two or more of the other economies systems.

Difference in Development Industrialized Countries hold 97% percent of all patents ownership (right to inventions) Have most of manufacturing and industry Developing Countries People in these countries are growing enough for their family. They are trying to become industrialized.
