War Affects the World

Fighting Rages Beyond Europe Battle on the Gallipoli Peninsula Turks vs. British, French, Australian British helped Arab nations rise Up against the Turks

In parts of Asia and Africa, German land came under assault - Japanese overran the Germans in China -French and British fought Germans in Africa

People from every continent were involved in the war They provided: Troops Money Weapons Materials

“If we improve our status through The help and cooperation of the British, it was our duty to win their Help by standing by them in their Hour of need.” Gandhi 1917 Colonial support

What did the colonies of the countries involved in WWI provide for aid. Do you think this was a good idea? Why or Why not?

The U.S enters the war (1917) In 1917 Germans announce a naval blockade around Britain *Unrestricted submarine warfare- German submarines would sink without warning any ship in the waters around Britain

May 7, 1915, German U-boat attacked a passenger ship, killing 128 Americans Americans were outraged and warned the Germans Germans would sink 2 more American passenger ships

Feb- 1917, U. S. intercepts a note from The Germans to Mexico. Allies? When the note was made public, Americans wanted to go to war April 2, U.S declares war on Germany

By the time the United States joined the allies, the war had been going on for 3 years In those 3 years, all of Europe had been changed (death, political, economic, life) Americans brought new enthusiasm to the allied troops.

1918- Russia withdraws from war Germans could concentrate on 1 front However, with the arrival of more than 2 million Americans the Germans were slowly pushed back Americans- eager, excited, ‘fresh’

How does American involvement change the outcome of WWI. Do you believe the outcome of WWI would have been different if the U.S. did not get involved?

World War I soon became a total War Total War- entire force of gov. devoted to winning the war Gov. told factories what to produce Unemployment disappeared Women working??????

What is Total War?

Goods were short supply Rationing- from butter to shoe leather, people were only allowed To buy so much Gov. also used propaganda- one sided information to keep up support for the war

What is rationing? What is Propaganda? How do they play a role in the outcome of WWI?

The Central Powers began to Crumble Bulgaria then the Turks Oct Austria-Hungary falls due to a revolution at home 11 hour of the 11 day, in the 11 th month the Armistice was signed

Leaders of the victorious nations met in Paris to work out a Peace agreement

When did WWI end and what is the Armistice?

Now that you have seen propaganda posters, how did they influence peoples opinion and decisions through out WWI?
