Stems Part I More than just a piece of wood

Main definition How would you define a plant stem?

Usually cylindrical, leaf-bearing, main axis of a plant, with nodes and internodes. Branches and flowers arise from external buds. They can be aerial (grow above ground) or subterranean.

Types of underground stems Can you think of something that you would call an underground stem?

Bulbs Can you see anything that they have in common?

Definition A thickened, short vertical stem axis with large, fleshy food storage leaves attached; usually borne below the ground.

Some common bulbs Many bulbs are in the Lily family or closely related to the lily family – Iris – Onions, garlic – Lilies – Snowdrops (Galunthus) – Crocus – First plants to bloom in the spring – Gladiolus – Daffodils – Hyacinths – Tulips

Many Spring Bulbs Spring Bulbs are favored among gardeners because they bloom as soon as spring begins. Bring lots of vibrant colors and sweet fragrances to the garden.

For each different type of bulb there is a specific planting depth

Homework What spring bulbs would you like to see planted in our garden? – Research about 4-5 different species that bloom really early, have lots of color and are easily available. – Find out when we need to put them in the garden – Find out what conditions they like best (shade, bright light, moist, dry etc…)

Will be graded as 40 point assignment
