Physics Science and Me Grade 5

What is Physics? Physics is that part of natural science which deals with the laws and properties of matter, and the forces acting upon it.

Systems A system is made up of parts that work together to perform a common function. case switch spring bulb reflector protective glass reflector batteries

Systems Some parts of the system are essential— they are necessary for the system to work. Other parts might be nonessential—the system will still function without them. Which part(s) could be removed and the flashlight would still work? Make a table in your science journal. List the essential parts and the nonessential parts of the flashlight. reflector switch batteries case bulb Protective glass Nonessential Parts Essential Parts

Sound What is sound? Sound is made when an object vibrates. A sound can be high-pitched. The object vibrates faster. A sound can be low-pitched. The object vibrates slower. Pitch Volume An object with bigger vibrations makes a louder sound. An object with smaller vibrations makes a softer sound. Sound can only travel through materials: gas, liquid, or solid. If there is no material, no sound can travel!

Forms of Energy Light Sound Heat Electrical Solar

The Sun Almost all of the energy found on the Earth comes from the sun. The sun provides light and heat for the Earth.

Light When light hits a reflective surface such as a mirror, it changes directions. We call that reflection. When light passes through some substances, it slows downs and bends. This is called refraction.

Electricity In order to make a bulb light up, there must be a complete circuit.

Electricity Making the electric current stronger will make the bulb burn brighter.

Electromagnet An electromagnet is a magnet formed from an electric current. The most common electromagnet consists of a wire coiled around a metallic core attached to a power source such as a battery. An electromagnet is a temporary magnet that can attract magnetic objects such as paper clips and other nails.
