DEBATE Should the Bully be seen as a Victim? TEAM# 1: Yes, the bully should be seen as a victim! TEAM# 2: No, the bully should not be seen as a victim!

Bullying….. From the Perspective of the Bully CHILDREN + MEDIA + EDUCATION + CHANGE

INTRODUCTION: THESIS/ARGUMENT/RESEARCH QUESTION: Due to new forms of communication technologies widely available to children and adolescents, it has become easier for these individuals to access media where bullying is not monitored and is seen as acceptable. As a result many of the media sources which seek to help prevent bullying, create awareness for those who are being bullied. What about those who are the bullies? What causes them to become the bully? Why are they bullying? It is important to understand bullying from the perspective of the bully. My research paper will analysis: 1) The effects of bullying vs. being bullied 2) Some reasons to why a bully bullies (Goffman – Online vs. Offline) a. Why is it important to recognize these reasons 3) How media facilitates bullying (Technological Determinism) 4) How this can be changed (Arendt) Focus: Gender, and Age in a School setting and in relation to media

DEFINITION: There are a number of Definitions of Bullying: The term bullying once was referred only to physical actions such as hitting, kicking, and punching.

PHYSICAL PSYCHOLOGICAL: Verbal Social Hitting Kicking Punching Pushing/Shoving Stealing Dating Aggression Insults Name Calling Comments about how you look or talk Threats Sexual Harassments Ethnoculturally- based comments Gossiping Rumours Ignoring Not including someone in group activities DEFINITION CONT’D:

Today, the definition has evolved over time…. What are some ways it may have evolved?

ANY THOUGHTS???

CHILDREN AND THE MEDIA Digital technology is changing media experiences Images and sounds seem more realistic, blurring the distinction between real world and media events Children are able to enter virtual worlds everywhere New media has become more interactive

BEHIND THE SCENES: Front Stage vs. Back Stage

CHILDREN WHO BULLY Bullying does not begin and end at school

Bullying during childhood is closely associated with future antisocial behaviour in adolescence and adulthood What happens to the future of our Children? Is this it?

CHILDREN WHO BULLY CONT’D: STATISTICS U.S. study report found that bullies are seven times more likely to carry weapons to school Children who bullied in grade 6 to 9 are six times more likely to have a criminal record by the age of 24 As adults, children who bully may display harassment in the workplace or may commit spousal, child, or senior abuse

BULLIES VS. THE BULLIED Canadian Stats:BulliesThe Bullied Elementary School15% - Twice in 4 months period 20% - Once or Twice in 4 months period High School11% - One Week10-15% - Once a Week Gender Differences in Elementary School 14% Boys 9% Girls 5% Boys 7% Girls Gender Differences in Middle School 42% Boys 23% Girls 10-13% Boys 4-11% Girls Gender Differences in High School 41% Boys 21 % Girls 10-13% Boys 4-11% Girls

IF AND WHEN NO ONE INTERVENES IN THE LIVES OF THE BULLY…….. OTHER BECOME VICTIMS AND WHEN THEY BECOME VICTIMS…..

VICTIMS OF BULLYING The Effects Can Be: - long-lasting Symptoms Include… - depression, - anxiety, - loss of self-esteem, - sometimes increased levels of aggressive behaviour. - headaches, stomach aches, school absenteeism, - and in extreme cases can lead to SUICIDE The Effect in Their Future: - psychological harm into adulthood including… - continued distress, self-blame, fear, and internalized problems such as depression

CHANGE What can we do to help prevent bullies from becoming bullies, or stop them from continuing their behaviour?

CHANGE Children who bully have not learned pro-social ways to resolve their interpersonal conflicts and frustrations. Children need interference by teachers/parents/ and or recreational activities: In Canada: 76% of children believe that popular media contains violent and aggressive images and content. 97% of children and youth indicated the attitudes beliefs and behaviours of students are largely molded by media influences

HOWEVER… Media does education and engage the public on issues of bullying, however do you believe that the representation of bully is adequate for its audience? Concerned Children’s Advertisement: ated ated Binaries: Good vs. Bad Official vs. Unofficial

CHANGE AND ARENDT QUOTE “Under conditions of tyranny it is far easier to act than to think. ” Hannah Arendt (sometimes this lack of spaciousness is how we recognize tyranny – as sometimes tyranny is easier to accept than recognize)Hannah Arendt “The sad truth is that most evil is done by people who never make up their minds to be good or evil.” Hannah Arendt

CHANGE AND ARENDT QUOTE CONT’D And education, too, is where we decide whether we love our children enough not to expel them from our world and leave them to their own devices, nor to strike from their hands their chance of undertaking something new, something unforeseen by us, but to prepare them in advance for the task of renewing a common world.” ― Hannah ArendtHannah Arendt

CONCLUSION: QUESTION: After listening to my Presentation do you Believe it is important to see the bully as a victim? Were you ever a bully? Or do you know anyone who was a bully? If so, why?
