Presentation transcript:

- POINTS ON THE BODY THAT ARE THE FOCUS OF FREUD’S STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT - A CHILD’S LIBIDO WILL FOCUS ON ONE OF THESE ZONES DURING EACH OF THE STAGES - MOUTH, ANUS, AND GENITAL REGION

DURING EACH STAGE THE CHILD HAS NEEDS AND DEMANDS. HOW THE NEEDS ARE DEALT WITH BY THE PARENTS LEADS TO EITHER: THIS OCCURS WHEN THE CHILD HAS TOO MUCH ENJOYMENT AND IS TOO RELUCTANT TO MOVE ONTO THE NEXT STAGE THIS OCCURS WHEN THE CHILD’S NEEDS ARE NOT MET

AGE: BIRTH – 1- 1½ EROGENOUS ZONE : MOUTH FOCUS: NURSING, SUCKLING

FRUSTRATION: - REFUSAL TO NURSE ON DEMAND -WEANING PROCESS STARTED TOO EARLY PESSIMISTIC, ENVIOUS, SUSPICIOUS, SARCASTIC OVERINDULGENCE: - EXCESSIVE NURSING - NURSING PROCESS CONTINUED TOO LONG OPTIMISTIC, GULLIBLE, FULL OF ADMIRATION FOR OTHERS

AGE: 1 – 1 ½ - 3 EROGENOUS ZONE: ANUS FOCUS: PARENTAL CONTROL; USUALLY IN REGARDS TO POTTY TRAINING

FRUSTRATION: PARENTS ARE TOO CONTROLLING. CHILD MAY OPT TO RETAIN FECES TO SPITE PARENT’S ATTEMPTS TO CONTROL THEM. CHILD MAY ENJOY PLEASURE OF THE BUILD UP OF THE FECES ANAL RETENTIVE CHARACTER: NEAT, PRECISE, ORDERLY, CAREFUL, STINGY, WITHHOLDING, OBSTINATE, METICULOUS, PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVE

OVERINDULGENCE: PARENTS ARE TOO LENIENT AND CHILD WILL FIGHT THEM BY GOING WHENEVER, USUALLY RIGHT BEFORE OR RIGHT AFTER BEING ON THE TOILET ANAL EXPULSIVE CHARACTER: MESSY, DISORGANIZED, RECKLESS, CARELESS, DEFIANT

AGE: 3-7 EROGENOUS ZONE: GENITAL REGION FOCUS: - NEED TO IDENTIFY WITH SAME SEX PARENT IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND THEIR OWN SEXUALITY -DURING THIS STAGE THE MALE CHILD GOES THROUGH A CONFLICT KNOWN AS THE OEDIPUS COMPLEX (ELECTRA COMPLEX FOR WOMEN)OEDIPUS COMPLEX - FIXATION AT THIS LEVEL CAN CAUSE ADULT CHARACTERISTICS OF RECKLESSNESS, BEING RESOLUTE, SELF-ASSUREDNESS, NARCISSISM, VANITY, PRIDE, FEAR, INABILITY TO LOVE

AGES: 7-PUBERTY URGES OF THE LIBIDO LIE DORMANT AGES: PUBERTY ONWARD INTERESTS TURN TO HETEROSEXUAL RELATIONSHIPS. IF THE CHILD’S FIXATIONS ON THE PREVIOUS STAGES ARE MINIMAL THEY WILL DEVELOP NORMAL RELATIONSHIPS. TROUBLES WITH FIXATIONS WILL LEAD TO FURTHER REPRESSION AND DEVELOPMENT OF DEFENSES HINDERING NORMAL RELATIONSHIPS.
