Mission Statement Assistive technology Portable size Controlled via Bluetooth Technology Triggers a LED array and/or bedshaker Wake up the user

Motivation Missing vital information negatively affects quality of life for deaf and hard of hearing people, as it restricts their independence and self-reliance. Most homes and hotel alert systems are audible thus neither convenient nor practical for deaf or hard of hearing persons.

Background Currently products exist on the market that include non- audible functions but are cumbersome for travel or may require permanent installation.

Customer Needs Lightweight Small (compact) size for travel/ easy to carry Usage of indicator LEDs Usage of Bluetooth technology Alarm is able to deactivate itself Alarm is able to activate even without the interface

Concept Elements Enclosure (CAD files) Software Electronics (Hardware)

Enclosure (CAD Files) Original Design – rejected in SD1 at Detailed Design Review 7 concept ideas created Vote by team to determine new design

CAD Files Continued… Size was minimized Original design – 1 PCB New design – 3 PCBs

Software MPLAB IDE v.7.40 MPLAB IDE C18 C compiler v.3.10 FlexiPanel Wireless Field Programmer FlexiPanel Remote Client Designer FlexiPanel Windows Remote Client

Electronics Hardware Toothpick 2.1 (Bluetooth transceiver) PIC18LF6722 microcontroller LinkMatik (Bluetooth 2.0) radio device Custom made PCB Contained the bedshaker and LED array circuitry

Validation Housing Stress Analysis Thermal Analysis Circuitry Software

Housing – Stress Analysis Designed to withstand 300 lb distributed force Used Roark’s Formula for analytical calculation Used SolidWorks SimulationXpress Compression Test – survived under 341 lbf Material: ABS Plastic Flexural Strength = 53 MPa σ max = MPa σ center = 27 Mpa δ = 2.76 mm

Overall Driver Circuitry Bedshaker Circuitry LED array Circuitry

Validation Tests for Driver Electronics Bedshaker Takes 412 mA LED array Drop across pairs of LEDs is 7.8 volts Current is safely limited via of resistors (<40 mA) Overall Circuitry Total current never exceeds 1 A

Engineering Specs &Results Weight 100 g (267 g) Size 11 in^3 (22 in^3) Alarm Activation +/- 1 s (+/- 1 min) Drop Standard 365 Gs (300 Gs) Housing Material Selection 341 lbf (300 lbf) Signal Testing 100 m (20 m)

Budget/BOM Cost per One Build $ Cost per Build when 500 devices are made $ Notes The cost is high because Bluetooth Transceiver is $122 each

Future Work Minimize external power supply Bluetooth application and interface for smartphone Reverse engineer Bluetooth Transceiver Standalone Bluetooth chip Investigate switch and microprocessor issue Injection Molding or Thermoforming for mass production
