Just in time manufacturing -Or- JIT manufacturing By: Jaylin Phillips, Ellis Pembleton, Qua Jones, Asante Parkins, Jazmine Moore

Just in time manufacturing Just in time manufaturing is a philosophy, not a technique. production model in which items are created to meet demand, not created of in advance of need. It originally referred to the production of goods to meet customer demand exactly, in time, quality and quantity, whether the `customer' is the final purchaser of the product or another process further along the production line.  It has now come to mean producing with minimum waste. "Waste" is taken in its most general sense and includes time and resources as well as materials.

The purpose of JIT The purpose of JIT manufacturing is to avoid the waste associated with over production, waiting, and excess inventory, 3 of the 7 waste categories defined in the Toyota production system.

Key elements and objective of JIT The elements of JIT include: Attacking fundamental problems- anything that does not add value to the product Devising systems to identify problems Strive for simplicity A product oriented layout Quality control at a source Poka-yoke/ foolproof tools, methods, etc. Preventative maintenance The objective of JIT is to eliminate waste capable of producing mixed process and to utilize cross trained workers.

JIT and Toyota Toyoda, the founder of what became Toyota Motor Company, developed JIT manufacturing. In JIT, manufacturers buy the parts they need as the need arises, which saves money from handling parts in-house. Toyoda also introduced the idea of Kaizen – literally, good change – which allows for continuous improvement with employee input.

JIT in Japan JIT is a Japanese management philosophy which has been applied in practice since the early 1970s in many Japanese manufacturing organizations. It was first developed and perfected within the Toyota manufacturing plants by Taiichi Ohno as a means of meeting consumer demands with minimum delays . Taiichi Ohno is frequently referred to as the father of JIT.
