SIT IN STUDENT-SELECTED GROUPS (4 MAXIMUM) BEGIN COMPARING ARTICLE ANNOTATIONS. DISUSS THE PASSAGE. English II Pre-AP/GT Concentric Circles

CONCENTRIC CIRCLES Preparation and Planning o See direction and TKAM example o Reread the passage looking at each individual word. What words stand out? Which is the most powerful? Come up with the three most important words and then decide upon one as a group. o Discuss the multiple meanings of the word and the author’s intent in this passage. o Before writing the thematic statements, consider the author’s purpose. Creating and Presenting o Follow directions on handout and refer to TKAM model as example o Draft your circles on the planning page o Transfer this to a large page (I will provide the paper, but you will need to bring markers or anything else you want to put on/in your circles. o Homework: Go to my webpage and look at independent reading handout (assignments). I will distribute this and a parent letter tomorrow in class. Start searching for your first IR. Let me help you (have you met our new librarian, Mrs. Kistler? She’s amazing).

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2 1. Set up Writer’s Notebook: WNB #1 2. Independent Reading Letter, List (you will not be able to choose your own book if your parent does not sign– I will choose for you). Look over the list. This first IR must come from the list. Last chance to turn in paperwork= Friday, Sept Transfer Concentric Circle Planning to Poster-Post-it. Write names of group members at the bottom. 4. You will present your Concentric Circles tomorrow at the beginning of class. 5. Homework: Read AND Annotate “Shame” before class on Friday.

WNB #1: POE’S USE OF SOUND DEVICES Stanza 3 from Poe’s “The Raven” And the silken, sad, uncertain rustling of each purple curtain Thrilled me—filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before; So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating “’Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door— Some late visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door;— This it is and nothing more.” 1. Copy the stanza. 2. Highlight alliteration (just repeated letter/sound) 3. Highlight assonance in another color (just letter/sound) 4. Underline Imagery. 5. Reread the definition of onomatopoeia. 6. Read the stanza aloud. 7. Explain the effect of Poe’s sound devices in the stanza in 3 – 5 sentences (with text evidence).

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3 o Finish Concentric Circles 10 – 15 minutes. o Presentations o Rubric: Evaluate your group plus one other. I will post all in the hall tomorrow. You should go by and look at groups from other classes as well. o If you have returned your parent letter, you may sign up on the google form on my webpage. I will let you know if you are approved to read the book you selected ASAP. o Homework: Go over Dick Gregory’s “Shame”- make sure your annotations are thorough. Look over the discussion questions at the end. TW 2 postponed until next Friday (you need to get the first one back before you can write another).

SAMPLE ANNOTATION  Use different color highlighters and label to distinguish.I used one color for sentence structure, one for detail, diction, and figurative language, and another for key points/main message.  Number paragraphs  Comments to identify techniques and EFFECT  Personal reaction is also appropriate.
