EVALUATION OF STUDENTS’ LEARNING AND PERFORMANCE IN TURKISH EDUCATION SYSTEM

PRIMARY EDUCATION While testing and evaluating of students’ learning, the aims and objectives remarked in the Curriculum are considered. The principles of evaluation of the relevant lesson are followed according to the the type of learning acqusition- cognitive, affective or psychomotor-

For students with special needs or physical disabilities, teachers have to prepare a private plan. These students’ are evaluated according to the plan. There is no written examination for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade students. The teacher uses rubrics and observation forms for evaluation. Students’ classroom performance are observed. On the report cards, their performance is marked as: 1 – The students’ performance should be developed. 2- The performance is good. 3- The performance is very good.

4th grade students have written examinations. The number of the exam is determined by the weekly Schedule. Teachers must quiz the students at least twice if the subject is two or three lessons a week. Teachers must quiz the students more than twice if the subject is more than three lessons a week. In addition to exam results, teachers also evaluate students’ classroom performance according to observation forms. Teachers have to give at least two exam grades, and one performance grade at the end of the academic term.

The highest grade of the exam is : failedis marked in report card as : passing grade is marked in report card as : avarageis marked in report card as : good is marked in report card as : very good is marked in report card as 5

At secondary and high schools, students are given at least one performance assignment in an academic term; and at least one project assignment in an academic year. These assignmets are evaluated according to the rubrics given in teacher’s book or prepared by the teacher. There are some qualities that any exam should have. First of all it must evalute all the acqusions that are marked in the curriculum. The exam must consist of various types of questions: multiple choice, True-false, essay questions, filling the blanks, matching.

The points of each question must be written in the exam paper. An answer key must be prepared before the exam. All the exam papers are kept by the teachers until the end of the academic year. And then they must give in the papers to the school manager. The manager must keep them for five years. The date of the exam must be announced at least 10 days before the exam. All the grades are recorded in e- okul (school) system, and arithmetic mean is calculated by the system.

Students’ success is etermined by the weighted arithmetic mean of lessons. In primary school there is no grade retention. Exceptionally, students can not pass the grade if they miss 20 days of the school. Moreover, on family’s demand students may repeat the grade. On secondary school, students whose weighted mean of lessons is below 45 fail. At the end of the academic year, all the teachers have a meeting and determine the student faill or pass. On the report cards their condition is written as passed, passed by the teachers’ commitee or grade retention is needed.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE.
