Admission to College and University Grades Prerequisite courses Additional Admission Criteria

Start with the student’s: interests strengths Activities during their spare time Praise their achievements and help identify their skill sets.

Expand the opportunities: Teens should Explore a variety of courses and experiences during high school. Focus on “what you want to try” instead of “what you want to be.” Use the time in high school to explore a variety of career options.

Build a portfolio Develop a personal portfolio for the workplace, or for college/university applications. Include references from teachers, coaches, employers, and community leaders, and examples of your personal achievements.

Recognize the importance of setting directions for the future by: Consider long-range planning options. Research job opportunities. Set aside time for reflection and discussion

Explore a variety of careers Check out the YRDSB guidance web site at Investigate career resources. Surf the internet career exploration pages. Talk to friends, neighbours and business contacts who have jobs that might be of interest.

Build your skill sets Required skills for postsecondary education and employment: literacy, numeracy, positive attitude, team work, critical thinking skills. Enhance these skills through school and work experiences.
