Presentation transcript:

Future Education and Organisation at SLU Education Conference 15 May 2013

Programme session I 1.00pm Introduction Why do education programmes need to change now? Pro-Vice-Chancellor Lena Andersson-Eklund From where to where? SLU students' background and success, Kristina Julin What degree programmes should SLU offer? Examples, Vice-Deans Karl Lövrie and Göran Hartman 2.00pm Refreshments

Why renewal of SLU's educational offering is needed SLU is responsible for ensuring that degree programme content meets the future challenges facing the green sector The limit has been reached – priorities must be decided Little collaboration between degree programmes (at different faculties) Degree programmes cost more than they bring in Growing need to prepare students for an international role Difficult to recruit students for some first-cycle programmes and for SLU's own master's programmes Unclear educational offering, both for prospective students and for stakeholders and the labour market

What must we achieve? 1.Content that prepares students for a long professional life -Mission, base and top, contact with the outside world 2.Greater internal collaboration - Quality, joint study, distance components, mobility, resource efficiency 3.Clearly structured educational offering -3+2 years & vocational degrees, common beginning & individual freedom 4.Greater internationalisation on all degree programmes -Mobility in & out, international perspectives 5.Sound finances providing good scope for planning -Multi-year assignments, rationalisation

What happens next? Education Conference 15/5, discussion of principles, offering and content Modification by GUR, consultation on joint guidelines in August (!) University Board 25/9; Decision on guidelines for educational offering and implementation plan Autumn term 2013 work on programme offering, joint elements, etc. 2013/14 work on programme syllabuses, framework timetables, etc. University Board meeting June 2014; decision on educational offering 2015/16
