Characters Detective: fifth grade Ted Hammond takes the case when he drives by the house while delivering newspaper-s and see a shadow!!! Criminal: April and her brother, Artie, and her mom, Alexa start staying in the Anderson’s old barn after their dad dies in a war. Witness: Fifth grade Ted Hammond(w- ho I told you about earlier).

S UMMERY One day, fifth grade Ted Hammond is delivering newspapers, when he sees a shadow In the Andersons old barn, So he stops to take a look…

It turns out that April and her family are living in the barn…

Ted decides that he has to help this poor family, so he brings supplies like bread, and canned food…

But when Ted brings the food back to the barn, the family has… D i s a pp e a r e d

Clues The name Alexa is printed on the bottom of Aprils shoes. Tire tracks are outside the old barn. A pencil from the sheriffs office is in the grass next to the tire tracks. After April’s family disappears, he(Ted) finds food that is still on the counter, and when he comes back the next day, the food is gone.

At the start of the story, April’s mom, Alexa, tells Ted that the reason that her family is staying in the old barn is that they were on there way to their relatives house after their dad died in a war. Their car broke down, and they were stuck in Plattsford, Nebraska. At the end of the book, the family continued their journey.
