Lesson 63: Solving Systems of Linear Equations by Elimination Expressions and Equations

Elimination Sometimes it’s not practical to use substitution to solve a system of equations (recall practice d from Lesson 59) Sometimes it’s easier to eliminate one of the variables by combining the two equations using addition or subtraction.

Example

A movie theater sells 540 tickets to a matinee showing of a new animated feature. A child matinee ticket costs $5.50 and an adult matinee ticket costs $6.00. If the movie theater made $3060 for that showing, how many adult tickets were sold?

Homework Questions

Correcting Homework Be kind. If the paper in front of you has no work shown, return it to its owner. If the paper in front of you is not in pencil or black ink, return it to its owner. If the paper in front of you is not complete, return it to its owner. Remember you are filling out the score sheet for the person that you are correcting. Be sure to write “C.B. ____________” with your name on the paper you graded and on the score sheet.
