Expanding the Empire Social Studies 8 Chapter 7

Expanding the Empire Our inquiry question for this section is: How did the Aztec worldview influence the way the people interacted with other cultures?

Expanding the Empire Does Canada have friendly relations with other countries around the world? Give some examples to support your answer. How does an attitude of friendliness benefit Canada? Are there drawbacks?

Expanding the Empire As the Aztecs searched for their homeland they came into conflict with many other cultures. How would this impact their worldview? What do you think their attitude towards other cultures was?

Expanding the Empire Expanding through trade One way the Aztecs interacted with their neighbors was through trade. Very few societies can produce everything they want, so they trade in order to fulfill their wants and needs. Items that Tenochtitlan did not have: Tropical fruit (they lived in the mountains) Tropical birds (they used the feathers) Gold and Silver

Expanding the Empire Merchants went on arduous trade missions with hundreds of slaves in order to obtain these items. Along the way, Aztec traders would make maps and spy on cities, reporting on potential targets for the Aztec Army.

Expanding the Empire Expanding through war Read the first paragraph page 167. How did religion motivate the Aztecs to wage war on their neighbors? The Aztecs created a great empire through conquest. In the Aztec view each individual was born to serve and die for his/her people. How does this differ from the Renaissance perspective?

Expanding the Empire The Aztecs created a warrior society in which military service was compulsory and “coward” was the worst insult.

Expanding the Empire As the Aztecs conquered new regions they demanded tribute from their inhabitants. In this way warfare became incredibly profitable. Turn to page 168 to the “Over to You” section. Complete questions 1 and 2 a, b, c
