Presented to you by: Tristan Smith The study of Gregor Mendel

Born in Heizendorf, Austria on July 20 th, 1822 and past away on the 6 th of January, Mendel was a Monk and a Scientist and he studied Heredity. Gregor Mendel Revolutionized the study of Heredity and inheritance.

Gregor Mendel planted and experimented on some what 29,000 pea plants. He planted these pea plants in the monasteries two hectare garden which was originally planted by Abbot Napp in What Mendel did was, he took the pollen from a flower and put that pollen in another pea plants stigma. Then he would mark down the two plants to know he used those two plants and he would then study the pea that was produced. Mendel would then plant the new peas and wait until they have matured.

Gregor Mendel found out from his experiments that the peas would vary from each set. Some would be smooth and others wrinkled and sometimes the color is different, or how tall the plant was. He found that the pea plant from the two other pea plants, had some characteristics from one and some of the other. This meant that some of the “information” must have come from the one pea plant and some from the other pea plant.

In Mendel's study of pea plants and the genes of the one plant to the other plant mixing, doesn't mean that if one is tall and the other is short you will get medium. This is because Mendel took a purebred tall plants and purebred short plants, and the offspring's where all tall.

The “Mendel Medal” is a medal that is given out every year to honor this Medal would be awarded to an outstanding scientist. Mendel was sadly not recognized in his lifetime, but in the early 1900 a few scientist found out about his work and greatly appreciated his ideas.
