Hosted by The Library of Congress and The National Archives and Records Administration Coordinators: Criss Kovac & Heidi Holmstrom

10:00 – 10:10: Welcome and Introduction 10:10 – 10:40: Round Robin from Participants  What is your institution doing  What outcomes / projects would you like to see come from this group 10:40 – 10:50: NARA's Motion Picture Digitization developments to date 10:50 – 11:30: Discussion of Proposed Projects / Areas of Interest

Altra HD scanner Capturing 1920x1080 Uncompressed 24PsF AVIs Stored on SAN Transcoding 29.97fps SD MPEG2 (50Mbps) derivatives Used as source file for reference DVDs Stored on NAS Spirit 4K scanner Current workflow: High-interest films captured as 2K DPX Color correction and dust/scratch removal in Digital Vision Produce 2K DCP and other derivatives Files stored on SAN, NAS, and hard drives (redundancy) Future workflow: Preservation scanning at 2K/4K, 16-bit LOG, 4:4:4 raw DPX Storage: ?

 Limited funding/staff/equipment  The size of DPX file sequences makes it difficult to verify them as they are moved across systems  Lack of software allowing for a quality check of the visual appearance of a DPX sequence DPX must be transcoded to a smaller file type in order for such software to be used

 Ingesting DPX files into a transcoding suite could serve as an integrity check—2 steps in 1  Use of digitization workflow manager to help the flow of information across systems and update metadata  Use of visual QC tool that checks for horizontal and vertical shifts so scans can be rejected based on instability detected in perf area  Use of ODTs (Output Display Transforms) to ensure we’re producing files that will represent the correct “look” of the film original across formats and platforms

 SOPs in place for all digital processes  Implemented Baton software for automated QC checks on files  Implemented Radiant Grid for transcoding to defined derivatives  Information on QC checks added to NARA’s Products & Services page: /reformatting/mopix-digital.html /reformatting/mopix-digital.html

 Workflows across agencies who are having their film scanned, or are scanning themselves  Creating a technical guide or sample RFP for those using vendors to do their scanning (cross referencing FIAF & Presto Centre)  Metadata Capture  Cross Compatibility of Transforms  Testing ACES workflows - discussion of a shared testing environment/ resources / case studies  Other?
