Day 2: Potential and Kinetic Energy
What is Energy? Anything that can cause a change in matter.
Two Types of Energy: 1)Kinetic Energy 2)Potential Energy
Potential Energy 1. Potential Energy is stored energy. 2. An object with potential energy has the ability to move or change.
Potential Energy 3. Potential energy depends on an object’s position or condition. Example:
Examples:
Kinetic Energy 4. Kinetic Energy is the energy of movement. 5. It depends on the mass and speed of a moving object.
Examples:
Potential or Kinetic?
Card Sort Determine if the situation on each card is showing potential energy or kinetic energy.
PE and KE Lab! Follow all directions carefully. Be sure you test each marble position twice. Answer your conclusion questions when your group finishes.
Discussion When did the marble have the most potential energy? When did the cup move the farthest? What did this show you about potential and kinetic energy?
How are Potential Energy and Kinetic Energy related? Energy can be transferred from potential to kinetic energy. If an object has more potential energy to start, then it will have more kinetic energy when it starts moving.
Homework On a blank sheet of paper, draw two pictures of situations showing potential energy and two pictures of situations showing kinetic energy. Explain in words why each situation shows that type of energy.
