 Be a ROCK  ROCKS need to listen twice as much as they talk  Guide the decision- making process  Be an advocate for the young person  Express and receive honest emotion  Extend realistic hope in the midst of crisis

 PREVENTION - ongoing support and ministry to all youth and young adults  INTERVENTION - immediate response to actual crisis  REFERRAL – building a caring community  MINISTRY - faith response

1. Establish a personal relationship 2. Develop good communication skills ◦ Active listening ◦ Clarifying skills ◦ Supportive/ directive skills 3. Remain clear, calm, balanced … personally secure … think clearly

4. Be aware of your own feelings, needs, and supports … who is your anchor? 5. Involve others in a supportive role 6. Don’t try to “save”

1. Do something … and do it NOW 2. Don’t keep secrets 3. Know where to go for extended professional support 4. Don’t moralize 5. Don’t rationalize 6. Give hope

 Privacy: Assure the youth or young adult that you will respect his/her privacy, and will not divulge the conversation to another without telling them you are doing so.  Limits: when there is danger of the person hurting oneself, hurting another, or of being hurt by someone else.
