Getting Ready for Sunday!

Palm Sunday

The Gospel passage in this Power Point is the account of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. This account will be read at the blessing of the palms on this Sunday – usually at the beginning of the vigil Mass. The Passion of Christ from Mark 14:15-47 will be read at the time of the Gospel. This is not illustrated in the Power Point as the text speaks vividly for itself without further aid. The Passion of Christ will also be read on Good Friday from the Gospel of John 18:1-19:42.

Palm Sunday is the beginning of Holy Week. This is a time of celebration, despair, pain, passion, struggle, confusion, challenge and great hope. We accompany Jesus as He: Enters Jerusalem to face great suffering while those who will abandon Him hail Him as King on this day. Gathers his closest friends together for the celebration of the Passover Meal becoming the new lamb of sacrifice at the Last Suppe: the on-going celebration in which we join when we take past in the Eucharist. Suffers the awful events of Good Friday – including betrayal by His own friends. Forgives those who have caused His suffering. Dies so that He may rise – making that same resurrection available to us at the end of our lives.

The Liturgical colour for Palm Sunday is RED – this represents the red of the blood which Jesus shed for us.

Matthew 21:1-11 Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem

When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them: Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, just say this, “The Lord needs them.”

This took place to fulfil what had been spoken through the prophet, saying: ‘Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’

The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them.

A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting: Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!

When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, ‘Who is this?’ The crowds were saying: This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.

Jesus is at one with us in our joys and our suffering.

Pray for the grace to accept God’s presence in your life.
