Background Why the need for this initiative across the Trust?

 Current NMC review – all graduate entry by 2013  National nursing shortage  DH – predicted shortfall of 14,000 nurses by 2010/11  Ageing registered nursing workforce  Succession planning

Why are we supporting this?  Alternative route into nursing  Partnership working with local F.E. college  “Earn as you Learn” & “Grow your Own” philosophy  Access route to RN qualification  Qualification in its own right  Staff development / career pathway

How does it work?  2 year programme  Professional Education funding  1 day per week college release  970 clinical “placement” hours  Mentor & student support  Pastoral support from College

 Fully approved by NMC as a progression route onto pre-registration programme  Learning Outcomes are NMC approved  “step onto” final 18 months of pre-registration programme  End result = BSc in Nursing Studies
