Bio  Born on in Torun, Poland to a wealthy copper merchant family.  Father died when he was 10.  Well educated: Graduated from his first University (Cracow) in Goes onto Study religious law, practicing medicine and becoming a Canon.  Mid-life Occupation: Canon at Formbork Cathedral.  Hobbies: Astronomy  Creates his own Heliocentric Model of the Celestial bodies.  1514 Writes about his work for the first time  1543 Publishes his own work for the first time.  Dies on May 24, 1543 due to heart complications.

Contributions to Astronomy  After much thought, reading and observation Copernicus in despite of the conventional beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church, placed the Sun instead of the Earth at the center of the solar system, thus the heliocentric solar system was birthed…  Actually not quite, the first person to think of this was Aristarchus in 270 BC. Copernicus just had better calculations to back up his ideas on planetary positions.

Point in Time  Roman Catholicism was heavily influenced by Ptolemy, regarding astronomy. They placed the earth at the center of the Universe.  Astronomy was not a significant scientific field of study in Europe.  Church funded lots of Scientific studies, including Copernicus’s works. Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.  Blasphemy  Copernicus didn’t reveal his work till the end of his life.  His publications were banned by the Church. astronomer church

Legacy  Copernicus remembered as the founder to idea of Heliocentricity.  Work confirmed true by Galileo, and expanded upon by Kepler in the 17 th C. and by many others later on.  Copernicus, now regarded as a revolutionary and hero, had his remains found and reburied in a better refined grave with a labeled black granite tombstone.
