UC San Diego Research CyberInfrastructure Strategy Charlotte Klock CSG Meeting June 15-17, 2011

2 UC San Diego Why invest in RCI Current fiscal situation RCI Core Elements Next steps/Challenges UC San Diego

UC San Diego Fiscal > $1 billion in funding New Vice Chancellor – July 2010 Rework Compliance & Ethics processes Rework COEUS system (Contracts & Grants) Budget constraints-Require Collaboration, Cooperation, & Communication & 3

Why We Are Investing in RCI Key Considerations: 1. Enhancing faculty’s research competitiveness and grant-generating activities 2. Complying with increasing Federal data stewardship obligations 3. Generating institutional cost savings (energy conservation & cost abatement) 4. Rapid growth of data and computation-intensive research demands 5. Trend toward automated, instrument-based data collection & analysis from remote locations 6. Medical Centers, libraries, ORUs, MRUs and Centers have an increasing need for collection and storage of digital data 7. Allow faculty, post-docs and students to devote more time to their research 8. Sharing computing power on a time-distributed basis will allow more efficient use of computing capacity

14,000 sq ft. RCI Core Elements Investment Campus co-location facility Extensible centralized data storage Digital curation resources and services HPC cluster condominium Expansion of campus 10 Gbs research network Coordination of CI expertise between SDSC, CalIT 2, ACT, UCSDL HPC Cluster Condo digital curation Digital Curation

Cost Estimates

7 Next Steps Encourage/facilitate use of RCI Redirect energy savings to support Co-Location Campus support ($) for a storage/curation pilot Develop std. language for proposals for RCI fees Move forward with network enhancements Review all future CI investments to capture synergies for UCSD RCI Completed & On going Completed In process On going In process

Our Biggest Challenges Demonstrate positive impact of RCI investments to administration Increased ICR Cost savings Demonstrate value & promote adoption of RCI to researchers Unmet needs (e.g., data management) Colo and condo Smooth transition to user fees 8

9 How do you show value/justify your RCI? Have your researchers adopted resources provided similar to the ones presented? If not, why not? How are campuses handling the power consumption funding issue? Other questions? ? ’s for you
