Exploring Density

What are the most common types of rock found on Lunar maria? Highlands? Basalt Feldspar How did you identify your rock samples? Size Color Luster Cleavage

What is density? If the mass is large compared to the volume the object has high density; if the mass is small compared to the volume, the object has low density. We will report density in this investigation as grams per cubic centimeter. (g/cc)

Which of the objects listed on the sheet do you think will be the densest? Which will be the least dense?

Gradulated cylinders Balances Plastic cups Water Things to investigate: Apple Wood Iron bolt Pebble Water

Weigh the objects to determine mass in grams. Determine the volume of the object by using displacement. Fill the graduated cylinder about half full. Note the EXACT amount in the cylinder. Place the object in the cylinder and note the new level of the water. The difference is the volume. Example: 20 mL of water Place the pebble in the water New reading is 32 mL Volume is 12 cc’s (1 cc=1 mL)

Once you have figured the density for all objects, rank them according to their density.

What did you find out? Should all our answers be the same? Why might there be some different answers for some objects? Will the density of two pieces of apple that are different sizes be the same? Why? Read: Top Ten Scientific Discoveries Made during Apollo Exploration of the Moon, pg. 78
