GCaD CYMRU NGfL Physical Education and games in school

GCaD CYMRU NGfL The government has put great emphasis on physical education and games in schools. What is the difference between them? ANSWER

GCaD CYMRU NGfL You will be studying Physical Education during normal lessons. Games are held outside lesson times: it is extra-curricular.

GCaD CYMRU NGfL Why are Physical Education and Games in school important? DISCUSS ANSWER

GCaD CYMRU NGfL Help you to learn about yourself and your abilities. Help you to develop a fit and healthy body. Help you to develop self-confidence. A chance to enjoy and socialize. You will be more likely to live healthily by regular practising in school. Lead to a career. Develop communicating, problem solving and team work skills.

GCaD CYMRU NGfL Physical Education in the National Curriculum Everybody from must have Physical Education as part of the National Curriculum. You will learn various activities which contain health fitness and welfare, creativity, outdoor and competitive adventures. You should also have a chance to take part in games and extra-curricular activities. This can happen during dinner time and after school.

GCaD CYMRU NGfL Physical Education - qualification You can sit exams in Physical Education and Sports Studies at GCSE level, Advanced Level and BTEC. This means you can enjoy the subject and gain qualifications, this can lead to a job in the field.

GCaD CYMRU NGfL Physical Education, health and fitness. You will be studying health and fitness in Physical Education lessons. But these subjects are so important that often the schools teach them in other classes as well. Many schools hold health awareness day(s), with speakers and workshops on subjects like, smoking, alcohol, drug abuse and AIDS.

GCaD CYMRU NGfL What physical activities can a school offer? DISCUSS ANSWER

GCaD CYMRU NGfL What physical activities can a school offer? It depends on: The expertise available. A school cannot offer an activity if there isn’t an experienced member in the field amongst the school staff. The teachers’ attitude – Many teachers give up their free time during dinner time and after school to hold games and other extra-curriculum activities. But these days many teachers have more work to do because of the requirements of the National Curriculum.

GCaD CYMRU NGfL The facilities available – Not every school has the money or the room for good facilities. The shortage of playing fields can be a huge problem, especially for urban schools.

GCaD CYMRU NGfL Discuss the benefits pupils could have from a physical education programme in school? DISCUSS

GCaD CYMRU NGfL Extra-curriculum activities Many schools offer extra-curriculum activities. They take place outside school teaching lessons e.g. dinner break, before or after school. Extra-curriculum activities sometimes give pupils the opportunity to play against other schools and other teams. This is important because they develop high standards and help some talented pupils to play for their town / city, county or country. These days, every school in Wales benefits from the 5 x 60 service which encourages EVERY pupil to take part in physical activities.

GCaD CYMRU NGfL Why should the government provide more money for physical activities in Wales? DISCUSS
