IMPERSONAL PRONOUNS MEC 3 LESSON 136 FRANCISCO NAKAJIMA

Impersonal pronouns  We use IMPERSONAL PRONOUNS when we do not want to identify the subject. E.g.:   One should always tell the truth.   If you want to get rich, you have to work hard.   People should often eat vegetable. ___ ______ ___

ONE  When we use ONE, we refer back to it using:  ONE, ONE´S/ONESELF  HIS, HIM  HIS/HER, HIM/HER  HIMSELF/HERSELF We can also use: S/HE – HIS/HER – HIM/HER – HIMSELF/HERSELF We can also use: S/HE – HIS/HER – HIM/HER – HIMSELF/HERSELF  ONE should never give up ONE´S/ HIS/HER dreams.

PEOPLE  When we use PEOPLE, we refer back to it using:  PEOPLE´S  THEIR  THEM  THEMSELVES  PEOPLE should never give up PEOPLE´S/ THEIR dreams.

YOU  When we use YOU, we refer back to it using:  YOUR  YOURS  YOURSELF  YOU should never give up YOUR dreams.

WE  When we use WE, we refer back to it using:  OUR  OURS  OURSELVES  WE should never give up OUR dreams.

ATTENTION!  SINGULAR PRONOUNS require SINGULAR PRONOUNS and SINGULAR VERBS; therefore, PLURAL PRONOUNS require PLURAL PRONOUNS and PLURAL VERBS.  ONE always has what S/HE deserves.  PEOPLE always have what THEY deserve.  WE always have what WE deserve.

KEEP IN MIND If you must refer back to impersonal pronoun ONE many times, you should use HE/SHE – HER/HIM – HER/HIS, etc. Using ONE/ONE´S/ONESELF etc would not be wrong, but not NATURAL. If you must refer back to impersonal pronoun ONE many times, you should use HE/SHE – HER/HIM – HER/HIS, etc. Using ONE/ONE´S/ONESELF etc would not be wrong, but not NATURAL.  ONE must have ONE´S goal to keep ONESELF happy.  S/HE must have HIS/HER goal to keep HIMSELF/HERSELF happy. CORRECT BUT UNNATURAL

Let´s check it  One can’t always say what really thinks.  One should learn how to solve own problems.  How do ……… get to the station from here, sir?  It’s important that you listen to conscience. ONE - S/HE ONE´S – HIS/HER WE – PEOPLE - THEY YOUR

 People should learn how to solve problems by …......………  Sometimes has to be able to look back on things and laugh about them.  We should always try to be friendly to neighbors.  Learning a foreign language is surely important if wants to climb the corporate ladder.  have to obey the laws.  If wishes to be as intelligent as Francisco, must study hard. PEOPLE´S - THEIR THEMSELVES ONE - S/HE OUR ONE - S/HE PEOPLE – YOU - WE ONE - S/HE
