Principles of Learning Addendum slides

Another word on repetitions….. A study just published in the Journal of Rehabilitation Research and Development (volume 47, no. 9, pp ) compared amounts and types of practice during rehab for persons with stroke and TBI. Forty eight patients were observed during treatment. Neither patient group approached the number of repetitions needed for neuroplastic changes!

Something else to consider… In general, repetitions per session did not differ between groups but persons with TBI did more reps in upper limb activities, gait steps and transfers. Interestingly, therapists with 15 years experience instructed patients in fewer functional repetitions per minute that therapists with 5-15 years experience.
