Belleview Elementary Grade 3 Teacher: Mrs. Romberg September July 2005

Main Menu Kaitlin Adams ABOUT ME COMMENTS MY PROJECTS Belleview Elementary September 2004 – June 2005 STANDARDS MET Exit

Main MenuMy Projects Cover Letter from Mrs. Romberg I gave Kaitlin a little help with this portfolio, but she decided which projects to include and made most of the design decisions on the computer. I helped her scan in the pictures and I did most of the text entry and set the links. Kaitlin has been a delight to know the past two years.

Main MenuMy Projects About Me: Kaitlin Adams I am in the 3rd grade at Belleview Elementary in San Diego, California. I have a younger sister. I have a crazy dog and a mean goat. I like playing baseball and swimming. My favorite thing to do on a weekend is go to the beach.

My Projects Learning to Read November 15, 2004 Click here to hear me read:

Description - Standards Description/requirements of project: Student will orally read a grade-appropriate book from cover to cover. Standards demonstrated: NL-ENG.K-12.1 READING FOR PERSPECTIVE Students read a wide range of print and non-print texts to build an understanding of texts, of themselves, and of the cultures of the United States and the world; to acquire new information; to respond to the needs and demands of society and the workplace; and for personal fulfillment. Among these texts are fiction and nonfiction, classic and contemporary works.

Notes - Comments Notes on this project or references: Kaitlin read this book into a microphone on the computer with no mistakes in one attempt. Teacher comments: Kaitlin’s reading realy took off in the last few weeks. She is reading above grade level now and uses good inflection.

Main MenuMy Projects Hatching a chrysalis June 1, 2005

Description - Standards Description/requirements of project: Student was to create a drawing of a flying insect. Was to use colors that were expressive, as opposed to realistic. Student had to write a paragraph explaining the drawing. K. did all of this, but did not offer many insights into the insects biology in the writing Standards demonstrated: NS.K-4.3 LIFE SCIENCE As a result of activities in grades K-4, all students should develop understanding of The characteristics of organisms Life cycles of organisms Organisms and environments

Notes - Comments Notes on this project or references: This was both a writing and science project. Student comments: I had a lot of fun working with the butterflies. I think I want to work at a zoo when I grow up.

Main MenuMy Projects Learning to Print Jan 12, 2005

Notes Description - Standards Description of project: The children had been learning to print all of the letters. For several weeks they were copying words out of books, this was one of the first times that Kaitlin had to print letters without copying them. Kids were given lined paper and used crayons. We will move to pencils next month. Standards demonstrated: NL-ENG.K-12.5 COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES Students employ a wide range of strategies as they write and use different writing process elements appropriately to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes.

Notes - Comments Notes on this project or references: Spelling didn’t count, but she did not make any spelling mistakes. Kids were given fifteen minutes to complete this. Student comments: At first printing on paper was hard. I’m use to typing it on the computer… and there’s no spelling checker! But, now I’m starting to like it. Parent Comments: Kaitlin was pretty frustrated at first in trying to learn to print letters, but she stuck with it. This is a sample of the dozens of times she did the same exercise.Mrs. Adams

Main MenuMy Projects Summary Comments: This year included a cross-curriculum unit combining science with art. Kaitlin had several projects which showed her creativity. Her drawing was accurate and attractive. Her writing was pretty brief (see Summary Assessment on next screen) She had a good grasp on biology (see Butterfly project)Butterfly project

Main MenuMy Projects Summary Assessment: Exit Kaitlin has been a pleasure to have in my class. She was always enthusiastic (you can hear it in her voice in the audio clip). Her reading skills developed incredibly. I would like to see her work harder on writing longer passages and her math skills are only “emerging”. She was really proud of her learning to play keyboard and her science experiments. She worked on her social skills in making friends and working cooperatively. Good job, Kaitlin!
