Global Synthesis and Observations Panel: GSOP activities and OOPC coordination Co-chairs Keith Haines Bernadette Sloyan

Global Synthesis and Observations Panel (GSOP) Major activities over the past year (1) Management activities Haines new “synthesis” co-chair (replacing Stammer) Major reshuffle of panel members (yet to meet). New “observations” co-chair needed to replace Sloyan Revise membership and ToR further to fit “new CLIVAR”?? Observations activities GO-SHIP Open Community Meeting (21 Feb 2010, Portland, USA): Sustaining/enhancing repeat hydrographic sections – Workshop on Deep ocean changes in SH June 2010 Hobart Second XBT fall rate meeting (August 2010) – Hamburg, Germany (Report on web) –Feed-through into Synthesis efforts Input to OOPC hosted Deep Ocean Observing Strategy Workshop, 30 March - 1 April 2011.

Synthesis activities Continued development of ocean synthesis database by Klima Hamburg; –Designed at requests of the “Initialisation/Prediction user” EARTH- SYSTEM INITIALIZATION for DECADAL PREDICTIONS (KNMI Nov09) –Need to also serve; Synthesis intercomparisons; Synthesis evaluation against observations; Development of Uncertainty metrics; Attribution of OHC and freshwater and circulation changes –What synthesis metrics to look at? Assessing model errors? WGOMD-GSOP Workshop: Decadal Variability, Predictability and Prediction: Understanding the role of the Ocean ( Sep 2010) – Boulder, USA (Report awaited) Global Synthesis and Observations Panel (GSOP) Major activities over the past year (2)

Global Synthesis and Observations Panel (GSOP) Major future plans/activities(1) GSOP-5 panel meeting Grenoble, May 2011 –OOPC and ESA involvement; Review common goals in data standards, good practice for ECV, EOV, generation, dissemination, user needs –Model-based Synthesis needs and promotion; Community activities? –Observation-based Syntheses, specifically Consistent Air-Sea fluxes –Towards Coupled Model Syntheses Co-hosting with GODAE OceanView Workshop on Observing System Evaluation and Inter-Comparison, June 2011: Santa Cruz –Operational Centre initiative; Coordinated data withholding experiments –Brainstorm on how to develop community-based climate synthesis tests Support of The First XBT Science Workshop: Building a Multi-Decadal Upper Ocean Temperature Record, Melbourne 7-8 July 2011 Input, convening and promotion of WCRP OSC

Global Synthesis and Observations Panel (GSOP) Major future plans/activities(2) GSOP requested Data Management Meeting co-hosted with GSOP5 panel but postponed due to lack of financial support! –How to support/reorganise? and get more into and out of CLIVAR DACS? –We have requested resources for this again in 2012 GSOP would like to sponsor Ocean/Coupled Reanalysis workshop in late 2012 –Focus to be discussed at GSOP-5 –Potential to co-organize with GSOP-6 panel –Need to review any overlaps with “WOAP Reanalysis workshop” plans

Global Synthesis and Observations Panel (GSOP) Science highlight slides Atlantic MOC variability from reanalyses Pohlmann et al 2011 Nat Geos. Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Anomalies in Ocean Synthesis Systems We need ocean syntheses to reproduce good circulation!!

Palmer et al 2011 GRL Subm. Deep Ocean heat content changes required to balance TOA radiation on decadal trends from 3 long climate model runs Coupled model evidence that the deep ocean can absorb TAO energy imbalances for periods of years Models supporting case for “completing” observing network Global Synthesis and Observations Panel (GSOP) Science highlight slides SST v TOA Full OHC v TOA

Global Synthesis and Observations Panel (GSOP) Issues and Challenges for Discussion GSOP already satisfies WCRP requirements for cross-cutting! Is GSOP to be the only/main/right cross-cutting panel to interface CLIVAR with the new WCRP structures? Consider /Revisit overlaps between OOPC, Data Council/WOAP and CLIVAR/GSOP ToR GSOP is trying to fulfill several roles –To stimulate syntheses i.e. data use, AND campaign for sustaining the global observing system AND trying to support CLIVAR DACS? –(DACS) support (Syntheses => New climate insights) justify (Observing system) This is the Theory!!! –Ocean Model-based synthesis AND Observation-based synthesis Self consistent air-sea fluxes (GEWEX requested link)? Linking OHC changes to TOA radiation –Take on Coupled-Model Syntheses while interfacing with WGCM? Lack of Resources –Who is responsible for coordination of data management? –GSOP unsupported requests for data management workshop! –What is GSOP grass-roots community that will do things together without much resource?
