Goals for the semester To have fun AND learn (it can happen). To hone narrative writing skills that foster creativity and self- reflection. To understand and appreciate the different forms of literature and their appeal to humanity. To create a learning community where students feel respected and safe. To teach students the value of communication. To have an enjoyable and rigorous senior year.

Policies/Expectations Students/parents regularly monitor Skyward. Check Teacher Page if absent, forgot assignment, etc. Assignments handed in on time—late HW rarely accepted, major assignments 10% off each day late Missed work due within 2 days of return Semester course-don’t get behind! Communication is key in all areas Grading: Writing/Projects 45% Tests/Quizzes 25% Participation 10% Homework 20%

The Human Condition In-class Reading: Hamlet Slaughterhouse-Five Excerpts from memoirs Grades: Tests, quizzes, writings, homework, class participation, projects

The Human Condition Vocabulary: Level H Quizzes after each unit Cumulative on final (given during midterms) Writing: Journal Prompts Short Essays Memoir/Autobiography 4 memoirs *Graduation requirement!

Memoirs/Autobiography Long-standing graduation requirement of G.V. Use Journal Prompts to generate ideas (place to practice, Types 1 & 2 Collins) Type 1-brainstorming, no “answer,” most used Type 2-shows knowledge of something (practicing techniques), could be graded as quiz (not normally here) Memoirs are about topics the student chooses Free to write about what has shaped them as a person Any concerns will be reported Encourage communication across all areas—no one should feel afraid to express worries, concerns, or troubles
