 Shoguns- supreme military dictators who ruled Japan  Tokugawa- family of shoguns who ruled Japan  Restored feudalism  Closed Japan to foreigners  Stifled Japan’s economy and growth

 Why was there discontent in Tokugawa Japan?

 In 1853 U.S. Commodore Matthew Perry, sailed into Tokyo Bay with a letter from Pres. Fillmore demanding Japan open its ports to trade  Japan was forced to accept unequal treaties with the U.S  Discontent in Japan boiled over with foreign pressure

 Meiji Restoration- Japan overthrows the shogun and restores the emperor  Japan reorganized their government  Strong central government  Diet- Japanese legislature  Ended feudalism and special privilege for Samurai  Japan adapts Western technology and industrializes  Japan modernized with amazing speed
