NWIC Teaching and Learning Initiative Leadership Team Meeting May 13, 2010

What is the Teaching and Learning Initiative?  Part of the Lilly Foundation’s Woksape Oyate (Wisdom of The People) grant initiative, 2007 – 2012  Focuses on the development of improved instructional practices that increase the ability of NWIC full-time and part-time faculty to respond to individual student learning needs and to effectively teach a native student population.

Activities  Coordinated by the Teaching and Learning Committee (formed Aug. 2009)  Survey of Teaching and Learning Environment at NWIC  Teaching and Learning Handbook  Contains resources for teaching faculty, including a toolkit of methodologies  Faculty in-service training on instructional strategies – Fall quarter 2009 pre-service  Faculty invited to create toolkit items – 9 completed and 3 more near completion

Activities continued  Creation of three websites – Faculty Home Page, Teaching and Learning Initiative and Learning Commons  Action research in teaching and learning in-service trainings – Dec and Jan  Faculty action research in teaching and learning projects – 11 in Winter 2010, 3 in Spring 2010  Articulation of the NWIC Teaching and Learning Philosophy

Activities continued  Teaching and Learning Summer Institute - June 2010  Teaching and learning resources – Texts and Journals for NWIC Library, Faculty resource room, videos, bibliographies

Future Plans  Completion of the Teaching and Learning Handbook – Introduction, Philosophy, resources, cultural integration – Use for new faculty orientation  Faculty Publication of Scholarship in Teaching and Learning (SoTL)  Publish proceedings of Summer Institute  Disseminate Teaching and Learning Handbook to other Tribal Colleges
