Specialized Faculty Draft Provost Communication Presentation to the Academic Senate February 10, 2014

Impetus for this initiative Senate Task Force in 2011 National concerns regarding NTT Faculty Title confusion and proliferation Desire to do more to recognize the contributions of this group of employees

Who are specialized faculty?  A range of nearly 40 titles of non-tenure system employees who are categorized as “Other Academics” by University Statutes, Art IX, Section 3c;  E.g., lecturers, instructors, modified professorial titles (research, clinical), visiting professors  33.67% of IUs taught by specialized faculty in (compared to 45.95% of IUs taught by tenure system faculty)

Foundational policies & practices Hiring procedures Offer letters Clear job descriptions & performance expectations Annual performance reviews Access to grievance policies & procedures

Specialized Faculty Titles & Use  Three main categories: teaching focused research focused clinical focused  Use of “adjunct” and “visiting” modifiers Adjunct modifier for less than 50 % FTE Visiting modifier reserved for Visiting Professors, time limited appointments of individuals more broadly engaged in all three missions

Career Advancement  Articulates promotional tracks  Senior Lecturer & Senior Instructor  Modified professorial titles (teaching, research, and clinical)  Recognizes a “teaching professor” title  New Provost’s Communication forthcoming on promotional procedures for research, clinical, and teaching professor tracks  Encouraged use of multi-year contracts with certain promotions/titles
