STRUCTURE: The Key to Student Success in a Hybrid/Emporium Model Mathematics Course

A Brief History In 2000, the UI was one of 30 institutions who participated in the Program in Course Redesign (PCR) through the National Center for Academic Transformation (The NCAT). Redesigned two large enrollment courses: Intermediate Algebra Intermediate Algebra College Algebra College Algebra (Approximately 2,400 students annually)

PRE-REDESIGNED (TRADITIONAL) COURSES Intermediate Algebra & College Algebra Traditional lecture format (Class met 3 days/week for 50 minutes) Traditional lecture format (Class met 3 days/week for 50 minutes) Class size ~40-45 Class size ~40-45 Paper and pencil homework assigned from textbook and graded by instructors Paper and pencil homework assigned from textbook and graded by instructors 3-4 exams/common Final exam 3-4 exams/common Final exam Drop-in math lab Drop-in math lab

Task List (MML Option)

Observations Giving too many options was bad Giving too many options was bad -Students were confused -Students had a hard time deciding which track to follow -Students were going back and forth between the text option and the MML option -Students were going back and forth between the text option and the MML option -Instructors had a hard time keeping track of students’ grades -Instructors had a hard time keeping track of students’ grades

Observations Inconsistent Learning Experiences Inconsistent Learning Experiences -Some Textbook track students read the textbook -MML students NEVER read their textbook follow -MML students watched the videos more than the textbook track students -MML students watched the videos more than the textbook track students -MML students got immediate feedback, textbook track students had to wait a week to get feedback -MML students got immediate feedback, textbook track students had to wait a week to get feedback -No students were taking good notes -No students were taking good notes

Observations Students were relying too much on the help features in MML. Students were relying too much on the help features in MML. We felt that most students were working their assignments in the wrong order. We felt that most students were working their assignments in the wrong order. -Students would first try to work the problem (and use the “View an Example” or “Help Me Solve This” features in MML) - If the “Help” features above did not help, then students sometimes watched a video (and sometimes took notes) - Finally, some students would then refer to their text- book

2009 Budget Crisis! The Math Department budget was significantly reduced The Math Department budget was significantly reduced Class sizes increased from ~45 students to ~250 students Class sizes increased from ~45 students to ~250 students Increased minimum homework prerequisite to 80% Increased minimum homework prerequisite to 80% Task lists were no longer used….and the Course Notebooks were created Task lists were no longer used….and the Course Notebooks were created Changed to the Trigsted eTexts Changed to the Trigsted eTexts

We Decided To “Force” Students To Take Notes In Their Notebooks Freshman don’t do optional….. but neither do sophomores, juniors, and seniors….. or faculty!

Staff are trained NOT to help students in the lab until the student has demonstrated that he or she has adequately filled out their notebook pages

Students Take a Notebook Quiz in Class

College Algebra Final Exam Results

The #1 Predictor of Student Success Is Their Performance on Notebook Quizzes Since fall ’09 Students who earned all in- class notebook quiz points have an ABC rate of over 92%. -Read the eText and take notes -Watch videos/animations and take notes -Work the homework problem last

Thank You! trigstedinfo
