july 2009 NEMO User meeting and 2010 evolution Gurvan Madec + the NEMO team + the NEMO developer committee NEMO ‘2009’ User Meeting - Introduction - Planned objectives for Road map Planned objectives for

july 2009 NEMO User meeting 2 #1- “shared” = daily support to users, web & paper documentation, model user interface. #2- “sustainable” = inscribed in a long term perspective: well thought architecture and interfaces #3- “state-of-the-art”= development/implementation of upgraded physics and numeric #0- “specific action”= priority development for the current year NEMO = a shared, sustainable, and state-of-the-art platform for research and operational oceanography.

july 2009 NEMO User meeting 3 Planned Objectives 2009: 1/2 # 0 O/I/A environment (“coupled ready”) generic coupling interface (achievement) documented ORCA2-LIM and its physics based on NEMO (IsENES) #1 user friendly (“shared”) IOM - for output (first implementation) Configuration manager (2 years, start in mid 2009) (My_Ocean) TOP & LIM3 paper and web documentation (2009) reference configurations (continuation) #2 developer friendly (“sustainable”) suppression of rigid-lid option rewriting of mpp library + timing VVL + improved time stepping

july 2009 NEMO User meeting 4 Planned Objectives 2009: 2/2 #3 new features (“state-of-the-art”) #3.1 - implementation of development (coming from outside NEMO team) Numerous physical package for climate ocean model (Tidal mixing, light penetration + ocean colour, diurnal cycle, ice-self param., katabatic winds) conservative leap-frog/Asselin filter observation operator (NEMOvar consortium) #3.2 - short-term developments (from the consortium members, end in 2009) New forcing (tidal potential, atmos. pressure, new river input scheme) embedded sea-ice & mass/heat/salt fluxes lateral physics (iso-neutral operator, skew flux... etc.) vertical physics (improvement of existing (tke2), addition of new one: GLS) sea-ice improvements (momentum forcing, snow-ice formation, EVP on LIM2) #3.3 - long-term developments (from the consortium members, will continue in 2010) assessment of s-coordinate split-explicit + variable volume (stability & conservation) generalisation of the split-explicit free surface (merge flt-ts, optimisation) AGRIF with sea-ice (from simple to fully AGRIFed) TAM for NEMO (continuation) high parallelisation on new plateforms

july 2009 NEMO User meeting 5 Additional Objectives 2009: UCL team : not formally member of the consortium, but… short-term (“state-of-the-art”) (expected in 2009) fine calibration of LIM3 in ORCA2 thin-ice representation tests of other plastic yield curves and ice strength param. long-term (“state-of-the-art”) (will continue in 2010) development of a comprehensive snow model development of a new formulation of ice rheology development of an ice-biogeochimistry component

july 2009 NEMO User meeting 6 Road map 2009 Version 3.2 (this summer) : the “coupled ready” tag (IPCC & co) reported bugs and minor improvements (Stream 1 & 2) generic coupled interface (Stream 0) New physics (tmx, rgb+ocean color, tke2) (Stream 0 & 3) IOM server (including “IPCC” required/requested output) (Stream 0 & 1) VVL + improved time stepping (Stream 2 & 3) mpp_lib cleaning (Stream 2) Version 3.3 (end 2009) reported bugs and minor improvements (Stream 1 & 2) New physics : diurnal cycle, lateral mixing, GLS, Fox-Kemper (Stream 0 & 3) New forcing (tidal potential, atmos. pressure, new river input scheme) (Stream 3) Suppression of rigid-lid (Stream 2) Conservative Leap-Frog + Asseling filter (Leclair and Madec OM2009) (Stream 3) Embedded sea-ice + mass/salt fluxes (Stream 3) EVP rheology in LIM-2 (Stream 3) observation operator (NEMOvar consortium) (Stream 1 & 3)

july 2009 NEMO User meeting 7 Objectives — (1/3) #0 Specific stream : consolidation + ”regional/coastal ready" consolidation: make sure that the recent developments are working together (LIM3,LIM3+cpl, interpolation on-the-fly, AGRIF, AGRIF+LIM, IOM server....) consolidation of coastal simulations (zps* (vvl), s-coordinate, OBC & tides, tidal potential, atmos. pressure, tide diagnostics, time splitting scheme, Generic Length Scale, etc...) + addition of a coastal test configuration. configuration manager (CFG-tools) : user-friendly interface, tools, and documentation in order to create a model configuration. (My_Ocean) The tools will include the generation of a grid, a bathymetry, an initial state, a forcing data set, open boundary conditions, and AGRIF zoom (shared tool with ROMS, SYMPHONIE and MARS3D) probably a coupled interface with WRF
