Office of Faculty Affairs USM (University System of Maryland) Policy on Adjunct Faculty, amended to apply here Director position in the Office of Faculty Affairs tasked with addressing PTK issues Senate-Provost Task Force charged with determining PTK faculty concerns and recommending changes to policies and practices New Faculty Orientation

Office of Faculty Affairs Compliance with existing policies Appointment system that doesn’t serve faculty or institutional needs Inadequate system of titles leads to mismatches between titles and responsibilities --- and thus to unclear expectations New Faculty Orientation

Office of Faculty Affairs Poorly defined and inconsistently applied standards for evaluating and promoting PTK faculty Little to no support or recognition for participation in professional development activities or professional accomplishments Inadequate opportunities for participation in shared governance at all levels New Faculty Orientation

Office of Faculty Affairs Current policies and procedures hinder PTK faculty efforts to contribute to the institution. Inconsistent compliance with existing policies is detrimental to both PTK faculty and the institution. 21 recommendations for addressing concerns. The University of Maryland can become a leader in creating a new model for how a major research institution fully engages all members of its faculty regardless of their tenure status. New Faculty Orientation

Office of Faculty Affairs In the Senate:  The University Senate passed a new system of titles that regularizes NTT faculty appointments, contract terms, and promotion opportunities.  The University Senate adopted “Professional Track” as the official category for faculty not eligible for tenure.  Both were signed by the President and approved by the Chancellor New Faculty Orientation

Office of Faculty Affairs From the Provost:  An online contract system has been deployed to provide better management and oversight of PTK faculty appointments campus-wide. About half of our PTK faculty have contracts created through the online system.  A type of PTK faculty appointment that allowed PIs to set benefits levels for certain research faculty has been discontinued. Beginning FY16, all benefits-eligible faculty will be given access to the same benefits package. New Faculty Orientation

Office of Faculty Affairs From other units:  The Office of the Vice President for Research changed the registration procedures for the workshops they offer to first-come, first-served.  The ADVANCE program initiated Advancing Professional Track Faculty, a program to enhance professional development and networking opportunities for PTK faculty at UM. New Faculty Orientation

Office of Faculty Affairs Campus-wide guidelines for evaluations and promotions pf PTK faculty Full deployment of the contract management system Development of institutional awards for PTK faculty Re-apportionment in the University Senate New Faculty Orientation

Office of Faculty Affairs Be willing to ask about and look up policies: -for summaries for policies >>> Don’t assume that “It’s policy” is accurate. Get to know your business officer(s) and be respectful --- they can make a big difference in keeping employment processes smooth. If possible, connect with other PTK faculty in your department. If not your department, try other units in your college. New Faculty Orientation
