Structure of the ILETS Speaking test Part 1: identification of examiner and candidate, introduction of the test, questions about the home or occupation of the candidate, questions about 2 topics related to life of candidate (4 to 5 minutes) Part 2: 1 minute of preparation followed by extended speech (1 to 2 minutes) by the candidate related to their life (3 to 4 minutes total) Part 3: a structured conversation with increasingly abstract topics (4 to 5 minutes)

PART 1 The examiner starts by saying: This is the speaking test for the International English Language Testing System, conducted on (date) at the __________ testing center, center number ________. The candidate is (name of candidate) and the examiner is (name of examiner), examiner number _______. The candidate shouldn’t talk during this part.

PART 1 Then the examiner will say “good morning” or “good afternoon”. And the candidate can respond with the same phrase. The examiner will again state his or her name and then ask the candidate to state their full name. Next, the examiner will say, “Thank you, and what shall I call you?” If you have an English name, you can tell the examiner at this time.

PART 1 The next question is about where you are from. Then they will ask to see your identification. After checking your identification, they will say, “Now in this first part, I’d like to ask you some questions about yourself.”

PART 1 The first questions will either deal with your home or your job/study. They may say, “Let’s talk about what you do. Do you work or are you a student?” Or they may say, “Let’s talk about your home. Do you live in a house or an apartment?”

PART 1 Questions about studying (only 3 of the following will be asked): What subject are you studying? Why did you choose this subject? Is this a popular subject in China? (Why?) What is your favorite thing about your course? Where are you studying at the moment? What will you do when you finish your course?

PART 1 Questions about home (only 3 of the following will be asked): What do you like about your house/apartment? What do you like about the rooms in your house/apartment? If you could have any kind of house in the future, what type of home would you choose? Do you plan on changing houses/apartments in the future? (Why?)

PART 1 After the home or study questions, the examiner will ask about 2 seemingly random topics (four questions about each one); topics may include: birds, numbers, names, colors, nature, animals, travel, art, music, movies, books, sports, exercise, eating, daily schedules, family, TV, games, hobbies, flowers, birthdays, walking etc…

PART 1 Examples of questions (most will relate to the candidates personal life): What’s your favorite color? (why?) How important are colors in your life? Is their any color of clothing that you would not wear? (Why?) Do people’s ideas of colors change as they get older? (Why?)

PART 1 Examples of questions: Do you like sports? (Which ones?) What is the difference between playing sports and watching them? How do the sports enjoyed by older people differ from the ones enjoyed by younger people? Do you think sports are too popular in society today? (Why or why not?)

PART 1 Examples of questions: Do you like playing indoor games? (eg. Board games or computer games) (Why?) Are indoor games popular in your country? Do you think you spend to much time playing indoor games? (Why or why not?) Are there any indoor games you would like to learn to play in the future?

Dialogue Activity An American teacher, Sally Baker, is visiting her student, Laura Chen, in Laura’s dormitory room. Sally: So, tell me about your family. Do you have any brothers or sisters? Laura: Yeah. I’ve got one brother and one sister. Sally: How old are they? Laura: Well, my brother is twenty-five and my sister is twenty-three. I’m the youngest.

Sally: And what do your brother and sister do? Laura: My brother is a middle school teacher, and my sister is a chemical engineer. Sally: What about your dad? What does he do? Laura: My dad’s a factory worker. Sally: Oh really? (falling tone) And your mom? Laura: She’s a factory worker, too. They both work for Capital Steel.

Homework 1.Prepare a 3 generation family tree and a short story (250words) about something interesting or enjoyable that you did together with your family as a child. (For example, it could be a memory from a holiday celebration, a family trip, or something that happened at home.) Be prepared to share this story aloud with your classmates. 2.Collect 2-3 photos that you have showing your family or friends.
