Light and color

When light strikes an object When light strikes an object it can do one of three things. transmitted Light passes through object reflected Light bounces off object absorbed Light does not pass through or reflect

Transparent, Translucent, & Opaque Transparent – light passes through; clear Translucent – scatters light as it passes through, details are blurred Opaque – reflects or absorbs ALL of the light; cannot see through it

The Color of Objects The color of an object depends on the material of the object and the color of light striking it. OPAQUE OBJECTS: they are the color of the light they REFLECT. TRANSPARENT & TRANSLUCENT OBJECTS: they are the color of light they TRANSMIT.

OPAQUE OBJECTS – REFLECT!! Bananas are yellow because they REFLECT yellow light! Leaves are green because the chlorophyll in leaves reflect green light and absorb the other colors.

TRANSPARENT & TRANSLUCENT - TRANSMIT Filter appears green because it TRANSMITS only green light.

What color does it appear to be?

Colored glass transmit they color they appear!

The colors of objects can change under different color lights.

Mixing Colors of LIGHT The primary colors of light are: RED, GREEN, and BLUE. When they are mixed in equal amounts they combine to make WHITE light.

Mixing Colors of PIGMENTS Inks, dyes and paints contain PIGMENTS. The primary colors of pigments are: MAGENTA, YELLOW and CYAN When pigments are added together, Fewer colors of light are reflected (more are absorbed). For this reason, it is called SUBTRACTIVE.

Notice they mix to make BLACK! Black absorbs all colors of light!
