Foundations of Medicine CASE INQUIRY(IQ) Faculty Each block has 20 groups--faculty members serve as group facilitators Group size=8 – 9 students meet 6 hrs/wk Case-based discussions Focus is on sciences basic to medicine Minoo Darvish

Foundations of Medicine Community Patient Care Preceptor 1 (1/2 day)/week sessions with one student Need at least 2 rooms Student works up a patient for about 20 minutes, does a concise case presentation & sees the patient with you Denise Carter-O'Gorman

Core Clinical Experiences: Basic Core Clinical Rotations BASIC CORE I Medicine and Surgery IQ+ (16 weeks at one of 3 teaching sites) BASIC CORE II Family Medicine, Pediatrics, OB/GYN IQ+ (16 weeks at one of 4 teaching sites) BASIC CORE III Neuroscience, Psychiatry IQ+ (8 weeks at one of 3 Teaching Sites)

Core Clinical Experiences: Advanced Core Clinical Rotations and AIs UNDIFFERENTIATED PATIENT CARE (4 weeks at one of 3 teaching sites, flexible scheduling) AGING AND SOCIETY (4 weeks at one of 3 teaching sites, flexible scheduling) ACTING INTERNSHIPS 1 in Medicine, Surgery or Pediatrics 1 in Field of Choice (1 of the 2 AIs must be in Cleveland at one of 3 teaching sites)

Clinical Teaching Taking an accurate history Doing the correct physical exam maneuvers Looking at the diagnostic possibilities Assessing students’ skills & helping them advance from: reporter->interpreter-> manager-educator

Opportunities in Mentoring Summer Research –8 weeks (between years 1 and 2) –Crile, T-35 (Ht,Lg,Bld,Slp), T-32, other Research Block (academic requirement) –16 weeks allotted in yr 3 or 4 –MD thesis required by Jan. 15th of year 4 –Frame a question, gather data, interpret data and attempt to answer the question – hypothesis driven –Topics can be drawn from a wide range of fields

Scholars Collaboration in Teaching and Learning Competitive program for faculty & students to develop as medical educators. How to apply (deadline Dec 31, 2011): –Propose a project –Materials available through Scholars work in pairs to design, develop, implement, and evaluate their projects.

Scholarship in Teaching Award Recognition and validation of excellence in medical education as evidenced by achievement of scholarship in teaching. Projects may span the continuum or be relevant to graduate programs offered by the school. Share best practices/innovations. Reward and recognize achievement in this area. Due November 1, 2011
