Companies Step Up Pressure on Ebola: We Need Action Now Maggie Fox NBC News- September 11, 2014

Ebola (Disease) Ebola is a viral disease with flu like symptoms in the first stage followed by vomiting and diarrhea and internal and /or external bleeding. It is contracted through bodily fluid or contact with an infected animal. There are five known strings to this disease: BDBV, EBOV, RESTV, SUDV, TAFV.

Ebola ( The Outbreak) According to the WHO, the first outbreak happened in 1976 in Zaire and Sudan with 318 cases (88% DR) and 284 cases (53% DR) respectively. Other outbreaks happened in 1979 ( Gabon), 1994 (Ivory Coast), 1996 (japan), 2001, 2002, 2003 (Congo), 2007, 2012, 2012 (Uganda). All of these cases have a mean DR of 67% and median of 71%.

Ebola ( The new outbreak) Why is it so alarming? The new outbreak: Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia with : Nearly 4600 infections (DR 50%) Nigeria and Ivory Coast have been affected directly or indirectly by this outbreak. WHO is estimating that it will take 600 million dollars to begin to turn back the outbreak. need-action-now-n200406

Why is it so alarming? “This week, the CEO of 11 companies operating in the region sent an open letter to world governments asking for more help right away.” Companies (Mining, transportation, construction, etc….) worried about operations, workers and future profits. Others: (Embassies, NGOs, USAID, WHO) worried about workers, economic viability and stability in the region.

How much? USAID: 100 millions dollars Bill and Melinda Gates Foundations: 50 million dollars ArcelorMittal: 1 million dollars, WHO: 100 million euros to MSFs.

The Economics

The economics Funds will continue to increase at a faster rate now that the cost to European/ Western Businesses continue too increase. Ebola Virus will soon be contained. It will not be done because of just “goodwill.” But because economics requires it.
