Jeffersonian Era:  Thomas Jefferson wins election of 1800, 3 rd President (Anti- Federalist) Jeffersonian Republicanism- people should control government, should be simple and small

Early 1800’s Events:  Louisiana Purchase- middle of US purchased from France for $15 million

Marbury v. Madison  Supreme Court Case Marbury v. Madison established the power of courts, sets precedent: Judicial review  courts have power to declare laws unconstitutional  affirms checks and balances/separation of powers

Madison/War of 1812  James Madison- becomes 4th President  War of 1812; second war w/Britain Battle of New Orleans won by Andrew Jackson US survives, affirms status

Other Early 1800’s Events:  Monroe Doctrine; 1823, Pres. Monroe (5 th US Pres.) warns Europe stay out of No. & So.
