VISUAL ART PAULETTE MITCHELL GRADE LEVEL 6 TH (209) & 7 TH (215) A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO TEACHING VISUAL ART

Visual Art Prompt Write a “Formal Written Analysis” about Georges Seurat’s; “A Sunday Afternoon on the Isle of La Grande Jatte”

What is a “Formal Written Analysis” about art? A formal analysis is an analysis of the form the artist produces. The analysis of the work of art by analyzing the work of art, which is made up of such things as the Elements of Art line, shape, color and texture. When writing a formal analysis you are deconstructing the artist work in your writing by discussing the four Elements of Art. (Line, shape, color, and texture)

FORMAL ANALYSIS VERSUS DESCRIPTION A formal analysis will inevitably consist of description and accurate description writing itself requires careful observation of the object and careful use of words. For example: “The pupils eyes are turned upward” is a description. The following revision is an analytical statement, “The pupils eyes are turned upward, suggested a fixed gaze.”

Study and Discuss the artist and his work.

What students are saying about “La Grande Jatte” Students formulate an opinion about a work of art: The famous painting of La Grande Jatte includes people around the river, gazing at it. Their posture shows that the people are relaxed and showing casual behavior.
