Lesson 9—Slide 1 Key Questions for Chapter 3:6-18 How important is consistency between “word” and “deed”? Is God concerned about our day-to-day living? What should be done with those who are “disorderly”? How does Christ give peace? Lesson 9: Restricted from Disorderly

Lesson 9—Slide 2 What had Paul taught the Thessalonians? (2 Th 3:10 NKJV) For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. What had Paul done among the Thessalonians? (2 Th 3:8 NKJV) nor did we eat anyone's bread free of charge, but worked with labor and toil night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, How important is consistency between “word” and “deed”?

Lesson 9—Slide 3 Because Paul had done what he taught, what was he able to say? (2 Th 3:7 NKJV) For you yourselves know how you ought to follow us, for we were not disorderly among you; (2 Th 3:9 NKJV) not because we do not have authority, but to make ourselves an example of how you should follow us. Is it important for us to be able to do the same? How important is consistency between “word” and “deed”? —Cont’d

Lesson 9—Slide 4 What was one specific way in which the Thessalonians were being “disorderly”? (2 Th 3:11 NKJV) For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies. Is there a doctrine from God that deals with this kind of behavior? (2 Th 3:12 NKJV) Now those who are such we command and exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ that they work in quietness and eat their own bread. Is God concerned about our day-to-day living?

Lesson 9—Slide 5 What does Paul say should be done to those who do not obey the instructions in this epistle? (2 Th 3:14 NKJV) And if anyone does not obey our word in this epistle, note that person and do not keep company with him, that he may be ashamed. What is the purpose for this treatment? Are there limits on this treatment? (2 Th 3:15 NKJV) Yet do not count him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother. What should be done with those who are “disorderly”?

Lesson 9—Slide 6 Why can Paul be so strong in insisting that his letter to them be obeyed? (1 Cor 14:37 NKJV) If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord. (2 Pet 3:1-2 NKJV) Beloved, I now write to you this second epistle … that you may be mindful of the … commandment of us, the apostles of the Lord and Savior, What should be done with those who are “disorderly”? —Cont’d

Lesson 9—Slide 7 What are Paul’s final sentiments/prayers for the Thessalonians? (2 Th 3:16 NKJV) Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace always in every way. The Lord be with you all. (2 Th 3:17 NKJV) The salutation of Paul with my own hand, which is a sign in every epistle; so I write. (2 Th 3:18 NKJV) The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. How does Christ give peace?

Lesson 9—Slide 8 What things in particular had disturbed the peace of the Thessalonians? Concerns about outside persecutions (1:4-5) Concerns about missing the return of Christ (2:1-3) Concerns about fairness in conduct, e.g. everyone was not carrying his share of the load (3:6-11) They had concerns that were external, internal, and eternal. How does Christ give peace? —Cont’d

Lesson 9—Slide 9 Christ brings peace in all these circumstances. Concerns about outside persecutions (1:4-5) Christ will bring justice (1:6-8). Christ is glorified when they endure suffering and walk worthy (1:5, 10-12). Concerns about missing the return of Christ (2:1-3) They can have confidence that He is coming and all saints will be gathered together with Him (2:1-2). They had been “chosen” for salvation (2:13). Concerns about fairness in conduct, e.g. everyone was not carrying his share of the load (3:6-11) Through Christ they were exhorted to work and not meddle (3:12). How does Christ give peace? —Cont’d

Lesson 9—Slide 10 Christ is our peace! (Eph 2:14 NKJV) For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, (John 14:27 NKJV) "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. How does Christ give peace? —Cont’d

Lesson 9—Slide 11 From Chapter 3:6-18 We cannot teach what we will not live. God cares about and makes demands on our everyday living. We are to avoid those who avoid God’s order (and orders). Christ can be our source of peace in all aspects of life. What to Remember
